Leith-Lillico Beach Cemetery

First Known Burial

George Mulligan Died 5th May 1864 age 49 years

The first church in the area was erected on the site of the old cemetery close to the outlet of Norfolk Creek in 1859. A new Church was erected on the site and was opened on November 3rd, 1867. It was 35 feet long and 18 feet wide, with lofty walls and would seat about 100 persons. It was moved nearer to Lillico in 1897. In 1908 it was sold for ten Pounds and removed to a near by farm where it may still be seen in use as a barn.

A Neglected Cemetery

The old Forth Beach cemetery is in a very neglected state and is quite overgrown with weeds, grass and rubbish. It is a matter for regret that more respect is not shown to the graves in which several of the pioneers of the district sleep. It is understood that there is a sum somewhere in existence for cleaning up the cemetery. Some five or six years ago a fence was erected round the graves and part of this has even been pulled down. The church building was demolished some time ago and has been removed to a neighbouring farm.
