An Octogenarian’s Death
There died at Devonport last night a colonist of 56 years’ standing, Mrs. M. Aherne, widow of the
late Mr. Maurice Aherne, once a member of the Second Bombay Light Infantry.
The deceased lady was born in 1824 in Limerick City and sailed for Australia in the ship
William Jardine in 1850 with her husband and two children.
They landed at Hobart in November 1850 and Mrs. Aherne was therefore a colonist of 56 years standing.
The family settled at Longford, having obtained a township grant from the Imperial Government and after
living there for ten years removed to the Forth, where Mr. Aherne followed agricultural pursuits.
Their next residence was at Barrington, where they lived until, her children having married,
they went to live with her daughter at the Don and subsequently at Devonport.
The deceased leaves behind her four sons and two daughters (all living on the coast),
29 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
