It is said that the diphtheria was carried direct from Barrington to Mr. A. M. Walker’s (Forth) – Whereat you already have announced three died in one house on three successive days – by means of a woman’s dress, which was carried from a house where the disease was or had been rife. That it is carried thus, I think there is undeniable proof. It has been brought from the Don, through Latrobe, and is settled in a family two miles to the eastward of Latrobe. Mr. Fred Maddox, who resides on the Deloraine Road, two miles east of Latrobe, had a girl living with a friend at the Don; and the girl having been attacked, and having recovered from the disease, he had her brought home as he thought to a healthier locality, and now the doctor is attending one of his sons who is attacked by the disease.

A Sad Case

A very distressing case of drowning took place at the Don on Saturday last, says the Devon Herald. It appears that a Mrs. Austin, wife of a respectable working man, left her house about 9 o’clock on Saturday evening, taking her baby, about 3 weeks old, with her. Her husband, who was in the house, did not see her go out, but missed her shortly after. Getting anxious, especially as Mrs. Austin was in a delicate state of health, her husband went in search of her, but without success, and several neighbours then started on the search, but every effort was unsuccessful until 2 o’clock on Sunday afternoon, when both the unfortunate woman and her child were found in the River Don, some distance from the house. We are informed that the poor woman, since her confinement, has been very ill and slightly deranged. Mrs. Austin was a daughter of Mr. Simpson, of the Leven, and sister of Mrs. Manix, of Northdown.

Mr. John A. Austin, a well known resident of the North-West Coast, died suddenly shortly before 12 o’clock last night at the residence of his son, Mr. Henry Austin, East Devonport. The deceased was a native of Launceston, and came to the Mersey district in 1854. He first settled at Ballahoo, near Latrobe, and subsequently removed to Don, where he was engaged in contracting for several years. He was one of the founders of the Don branch of the M.U., I.O.O.F., which has since amalgamated with the Mersey lodge, and he remained a member up to the time of his death. For the past 26 years, Mr. Austin has been carrying out farming pursuits at Sisters Creek. He was 74 years of age, and was twice married, leaving a large grown up family. One of his sons is at present serving with the Australian Expeditionary Force. The funeral will take place at the Don cemetery on Tuesday.
