A Don Complaint
To the editor
Sir. – Kindly allow me space in your paper to voice a complaint against persons interfering with and
damaging, and in many cases, stealing valuable things from the Don cemetery, in spite of a notice having
been erected by the committee warning offenders against such mean contemptible practices.
There is not the slightest doubt that the committee will take steps and do all they can to protect
the properties and articles of those concerned by endeavouring to find out the culprits. It is not
altogether the value of the articles stolen that causes the greatest trouble, but the inconvenience
that people are put to. Nice receptacles are often used in which to place flowers to beautify the graves
of their loved ones, and these are stolen. Some people have an idea that boys do this kind of thing.
If such is the case, perhaps the committee could prevent them from being allowed in without some body to
look after them. However, I am prepared to give a substantial reward to any person who can give me
information that will lead to the conviction of any person or persons damaging or carrying anything away
from my allotment, or from any allotment which I am personally interested in. I trust that with the
co-operation of the committee, we shall be able to protect the interest of all concerned, and keep the
little cemetery at the Don in first-rate order. Yours, G. F. BARKER
Don, October 6.

The Advocate 2nd October 1933
Late Mrs. Mary Barker.
The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Barker, who died at Devonport on Sunday, took place yesterday afternoon at the
Forth Methodist Cemetery, in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends.
Chief mourners were Messrs. Owen Barker (New Town), Mortimer Barker (Forth) and Lindon Barker (Burnie), sons; and
Messrs. G. B. Vertigan (Forth), T. Y. Vertigan (Leith), H. A. and E. H. B. Vertigan (Forth), brothers.
Mrs. Barker also leaves two daughters - Mrs. E. Grainger and Miss M. Barker, both of Devonport and her three
surviving sisters are Mrs. Mills (Burnie), Mrs. Diprose (Glenorchy) and Mrs. A. Lillico (Devonport). Her husband,
the late Mr. George Barker, of Forth, died 36 years ago.
The carriers were four nephews, Messrs. J. Lillico, K. Vertigan, W. G. Barker and V. Barker and the pall bearers
were Messrs. A. Lillico, M.L.C., G. P. R. Mulligan, A. K. Parker and E. T. Vertigan. The service was conducted by
Revs. H. M. Knuckey and Wilkinson.
The late Mrs. Barker, who had reached the advanced age of 83 years, was the oldest member of the family of the late
Mr and Mrs. John Vertigan, well - remembered Don district pioneers. She was one of the younger members of the party
of immigrants who arrived at Launceston on the sailing ship Southern Eagle in 1857. Many of the passengers went to
Don and founded such well-known families as the Macrows, Parkers, Yaxleys, Vertigans, Judds and Snares - names
which are still well-known. Mrs. Barker spent practically all her life in the Don, Forth and Devonport districts.
Her late husband was a well-known farmer at Don. Five years ago she became seriously ill and although she recovered
her health to some extent, she gradually declined and died after having been unconscious for some days.
Among the many beautiful wreaths were those from the directors of the Tasmanian Farmers' Co-operative Association
(Burnie) and the drapery staff of that firm.
