The North West Post 12th May 1898

We regret having to announce the death of a very old identity and pioneer of the North West Coast, Captain Edward Joseph Beecraft, of the Forth, who expired yesterday, after an attack of congestion of the lungs, which supervened on influenza. We received a telegram informing us of the sad event at a late hour last night. The deceased was highly respected throughout the district where he had resided and all along the coast, with which he has been identified for a very long period. He originally took up his abode at the Forth over forty years ago and was well known along the entire coast. He was for many years a member of the Mersey Marine Board. At one time he had a small schooner, named the Trader, built to his order at the Penguin and took command himself, running the little craft between there and Melbourne, he and his boat becoming almost as well acquainted in the port of Melbourne as on this coast. After a while he retired from the sea and took up his permanent abode at the Forth, where he became an intimate friend of the late Mr. James Smith, who discovered the Mount Bischoff tin mine and then entered into partnership with the Messrs Walker, two brothers, in a claim adjoining the Bischoff. The venture, however, did not turn out satisfactory. He married a daughter of Mr. Thomas, of Northdown and entered upon farming pursuits at the Forth. He leaves a widow and family. The funeral takes place at 2 o’clock to-morrow afternoon.

The flag at the Mersey Marine Board office was yesterday at half-mast, as a token of respect to the memory or the late Captain Beecraft of the Forth, whose death was reported last issue. The deceased gentleman was a warden of the board for many years.
