DEATH OF MR. JOHN COLE

A Distinguished Career

It is with regret that we have to record the death of Mr. John Cole, sanitary inspector to the Devonport Municipal Council, which occurred at his residence, Archer Street, Devonport, early on Saturday morning. The deceased had been suffering from a liver complaint for some time, being under treatment in the Devon Hospital for a while, but Mr. Cole – old veteran that he was – persisted in returning to duty and practically died in harness. He was about on Monday last, but on Tuesday he had a seizure in the street and was conveyed to his home, never leaving his bed until released by death. He had had an adventurous and distinguished career. He was a member of the Imperial troops engaged in the New Zealand Maori war, securing medals for valor and for saving life and also a service medal. On his discharge he came to Tasmania and entered the police force, in which he remained for 25 years. Attaining the rank of Sub-Inspector, holding that position at Formby before the amalgamation of the East and West Devonport. In 1890 he was transferred to Launceston and later left the force on a pension. He accepted the position of inspector to the Town Board at a nominal salary, but his duties and emoluments gradually increased during his 16 years of office. He was a faithful and trusted employee and his loss will be deeply regretted by many friends. He leaves a widow and grown up family, for whom every sympathy will be felt.

FUNERAL OF MR. JOHN COLE

There was a large and representative attendance yesterday afternoon at the funeral of the late Mr. John Cole, whose death occurred at Devonport on Saturday. Deceased’s was an eventful history, he having during his life, which just passed the three score years and ten, a record of service with the troops in the 12th East Suffolk Regiment, with the Tasmanian police for 25 years and with the local ruling body as inspector for 16 years. It was not surprising that all classes honored his memory. He was a true Britisher and was one of the foundation members of the local branch of the Royal Society of St. George and an active member of the committee. He was a strong supporter of the Boy Scout movement which unfortunately has fallen through as far as Devonport is concerned. A member and regular attendant of the Presbyterian Church, the religious services yesterday afternoon were conducted by the Rev. D. S. Jones, who was attended by Cr. S. Beattie and Mr. S. S. Field, elders of the local church. The chief mourners were deceased’s two sons, Thomas (Nabowla) and Henry (Devonport), with a grandson.

Don

Much sorrow has come into the home of Mr. W. Cole, a native of the district and son of a very old resident. On Sunday his little son, six years of age, was buried in the Don cemetery, making the second child in less than a week; the other one, about two years of age, expired rather suddenly on the previous Sunday. A statement was heard that the deaths were due to diphtheria, traceable to the water that had been used, but this has not been medically confirmed. Every sympathy has been expressed in the hamlet for Mr. and Mrs. Cole, who have since their bereavement changed their place of residence.
