OBITUARY

Mr. A. C. Dawes.

The funeral of the late Mr. Albert Clarence Dawes, who died suddenly at his home at Forth on Friday night, took place on Sunday afternoon and was one of the largest seen at Forth. There were more than 50 cars in the cortege and it is estimated that there were approximately a thousand people present.
The service was conducted by the rector (Rev. B. S. Hammond) and the carriers were Messrs. Art Pearce, G. Watson, Alf Pearce and H. Woods. Chief mourners were the son and a daughter, Mr. Ryton Dawes and Miss Thelma Dawes and a number of relatives. The large number of beautiful wreaths included one from the Forth State School Parents' Association.
The late Mr. Dawes was in his 50th year and was born in the house in which we was living when he died. The blacksmith's shop at Forth, an old landmark in the district, was conducted by his late father, Mr. Sam Dawes, who was well known on the N.W. Coast in earlier times. Deceased worked for his father when a lad and continued on there when Mr. Wm. Keogh took over the business. In 1908 he left Forth and spent some time at Wynyard on the West Coast and in other parts before taking over a smithy at Forest. In 1914 he was married at Forest to Miss Ruffles, who survives him. About twelve years ago deceased left Forest and returned to Forth and had since carried on business there. He was an excellent tradesman and was esteemed in the community for his integrity and honesty. Though of a naturally quiet disposition, he had a wide circle of friends. Any movement of benefit to the district claimed his interest and he was a ready helper of the needy and infirm. The large attendance at the funeral, which included visitors from centres as far as Stanley, indicated the deep sympathy felt for the widow and family. One son died in infancy. Other members of the family are Mr. Ryton Dawes, Miss Thelma and Aileen Dawes.
Members of the local Oddfellows' Lodge preceded the hearse and were present in large numbers. Deceased had been a member of that Order for many years. he had been a member of Forth recreation ground committee for several years.
