The Advocate 4th May 1904

The death occurred at Devonport yesterday morning of an old Tasmanian identity, in the person of Miss Catherine Dean, 91 years of age, who passed away from bronchitis, at the residence of her sister, Mrs. D. Cocker, Turton Street. As maybe gathered from her great age, the deceased lady has seen many phases of Tasmanian history, for she arrived in the colony in 1835. She was born at Wetstone, England, in 1813 and accompanied her cousin, Miss Lucy Dean, to the island when in her 20th year. On their arrival they were met by Mr. W. Dean, of Belmont, and went to New Norfolk, where the deceased resided until the marriage of her cousin to Mr. Gerrand, the Anglican clergyman at New Norfolk. Then she went to Launceston and lived with Mr. and Mrs. Jennings. The Wesleyans were about that time establishing a church there and Miss Dean became an active member, doing much useful work in church and Sunday school. Her brother arrived in Launceston in 1842 and Miss Dean then went to reside with him, remaining there until a short time ago. She came to Devonport to spend a brief holiday with her sister recently and was hopeful of returning to Launceston yesterday to her nephews and nieces. Considering her great age, the deceased lady was very active, while her faculties were unimpaired. She voted at the last Federal elections and took considerable interest in the events transpiring around her. Though she saw much of the early life of the state, she rarely referred to it, though, had she done so, her reminiscences should have been most interesting.
