SUDDEN DEATH AT BEULAH

Devonport Resident’s End

A coronial inquiry was held at Beulah yesterday by the Coroner (Hon. John Hope) into the circumstances surrounding the death of Edward Downing, a resident of Devonport.
J. Richard’s said that deceased was his brother-in-law, and had been staying at his place on a holiday. He retired to rest on Tuesday evening in good spirits and apparently in good health. Next morning he was found dead in his bed.
Dr. Parker, of Sheffield, deposed that he had made a post mortem examination of the body, and the evidence showed that death was the result of heart failure.
The Coroner, after hearing other evidence, returned a verdict of accordance with the medical testimony. The body was subsequently conveyed to Devonport for interment, the funeral taking place this afternoon.
Deceased was born at Falmouth, England, 56 years ago, and came to Devonport from Adelaide in the nineties. He was one of the crew of the dredge Davenport, which was purchased by the Marine Board, and he remained in the Marine Boards employ until a few years ago, when owing to failing eyesight, he had to give up his work.
Latterly, he became almost totally blind. He leaves a widow, but no children.
