PASSING OF A PIONEER
Mrs. J. Fannon Sen., of Devonport
Much regret was expressed in Devonport yesterday when it became know that Mrs. Fannon, Sen., who has been ill for some time, passed away in her 84th year. She was the widow of the late Mr. James Fanon and came to the Mersey District 64 years ago. She leaves a grown up family of one daughter and five sons alive. The sons are Messrs. Thomas and William Fannon (Devonport). H. P. Fannon (Burnie). James Fannon (Hobart) and P.F. Fannon (New Zealand). The surviving daughter, Miss M. Fannon, lived with her mother. The deceased was born in Cork, Ireland and with her husband, the late Mr. James Fannon (who died many years ago), came to Formby to live when there were only three other residents at what is now the important center of West Devonport. Later the family moved to the Don, the busy hut of the territory for miles round in those days, but some years later returned to Formby. Mrs. Fannon in latter years took much pleasure in recounting experiences of the early days on the coast. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving her late residence for the Forth Catholic Cemetery at 1.30 p.m.

DEVONPORT
A Sudden Death – The painful discovery was made early yesterday morning that Miss Margaret Fannon had died during the night at her residence in Tasman Street. At 10 o’clock the previous evening, when she retired, she was in her usual health and spirits, although she had not recovered from a recent attach of influenza. A niece (Miss. A. M. Johnstone) slept in an adjoining room and at about 2 a.m. thought she heard something fall. However, there was not sufficient in this incident to attach any importance to it. At 9 o’clock yesterday morning, however Miss Johnstone went to Miss Fannon’s room and found her dead on the floor. It appeared that deceased had felt unwell during the night, got up for something and suddenly expired. She had been nursing number residents who were suffering from influenza and was quite run down when she contracted the complaint herself. Dr. J.W. Payne, who attended her during and since the attack of influenza, found that death was due to heart failure. The deceased lady was 57 years of age and both parents predeceased her, Mrs. Fannon passing away only a short time ago. There are four brothers – Messrs. T. and W. Fannon, of Devonport; H. P. Fannon of Burnie and P. Fannon of New Zealand.

The North West Post 10th February 1911
By the death of Mr. Michael Fannon, which occurred during Wednesday night, the Mersey district lost one of its earliest natives. He was the oldest son of the late Mr. Jas Fannon and was born at Formby in 1858 and had practically lived all his life within a few miles of the town, as his parents resided for some tome at Don. About 10 or 11 years ago he sustained a broken shoulder blade on the wharf, being struck down by a falling bag of grain, from the effects of which he never fully recovered and for the last few years he had been a confirmed invalid. Of his brothers, Messrs. Wm. And T. Fannon lived at Devonport, also his aged widowed mother and Mr. H. F. Fannon is a Burnie resident. They will receive the sympathy of the residents in their sad bereavement, albeit a very great sufferer has gone to his long rest.
The deceased had been a member of the Don Oddfellows’ Lodge since he was 18, thus covering the long period of 35 years. The funeral is appointed to leave his mother’s residence, Tasman Street, at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow, for the Forth Cemetery
