Mr. J. W. Filleul
A Forth Pioneer
The North West Coast lost another of its pioneers yesterday, in the person of Mr. J. W. Filleul of Forth, who passed away during his sleep. Mr. Filleul attended church on Sunday night and sat up talking with his family until 9 o’clock. At 7 o’clock yesterday morning he was discovered dead in bed. The event came as a shock to his family and to all acquaintances. He was apparently in his usual state of health on Sunday and medical man expressed the opinion that the cause of death was heart failure. Some time ago it was ascertained that he had a weak heart, but it was not anticipated that it would have such a sudden effect. Mr. Filleul was a native of Jersey, Channel Islands, and was about 79 years of age. He came to the Forth some 56 years ago, landing at Leith, which was the first place in Tasmania that he set foot upon. He first resided at Norfolk Creek, and subsequently he carved out a home for himself out of dense scrub at “Ben Acre,” Kindred. Three years ago, Mr. And Mrs. Filleul celebrated their golden wedding, and with the exception of one daughter (Mrs. T. Vertigan,) the death of Mr. Filleul is the first break in the family. He was generally respected on the Coast, and was well known for his hospitality and kindness. He leaves a widow, and seven daughters – Mesdames J. G. Pike (Forth), R. Mott (Ulverstone), A. R. Bunton (formerly of Devonport, but now of Victoria), H. A. Vertigan (Forth), and the Misses Lillian and Gladys Filleul (Forth); and six sons – Messrs. Percy Filleul (Sydney), Selby Filleul (New Zealand), John Filleul (Kindred), Albert Filleul (Forth), and Walter Filleul. Selby Filleul only arrived from New Zealand on a visit to his parents two days ago. There are a large number of grandchildren. The funeral will take place tomorrow at the Forth Congregational Cemetery.Wife of James Filleul
