Children of John and Maria Gabell (Née Jordan)
Diphtheria is paying us a visit at present and there are several cases. This week Mr. Gabell lost a daughter about 14 years of age, and two or three more of his family are down with it, but I am informed they are on the turn for the better. The public school is closed on account of the sickness.
The Examiner 3rd May 1877
I regret to say diphtheria is not yet checked here, Mr. Gabell having lost a second daughter, while others are suffering from the same complaint.

Mortality at the Don
To the Editor of the Examiner
Sir, In a late issue you state that a family at the Don had recently lost five from Diphtheria. It is a sad case, their ages vary from 19 years downwards, and not long since another family, a stone’s throw off, lost three, and I believe other families have had sickness. Is there not a cause for this, and cannot it be removed? The other day a visitor reported it might arise from the road made across the Mersey, and which had no outlet for the water to pass through. The Don being a private establishment may raise a difficulty in enquiries being instituted, but in the interest of humanity something ought to be done. To outsiders the coast people do what is right in their own eyes. No inquests when sudden deaths occur. The Marine Board quite asleep, and now a fearful mortality and nothing done. Such things ought not to be. Yours, &c., HUMANITY MAY 26
The Examiner 31 May 1877.
John Alfred Gabell
Don Congregational Cemetery
Died 19 Jan 1894
Age 83 years
Husband of Maria
One of the oldest residents of the Don in the person of Mr. G. A. Gabell expired early on Friday morning. The deceased took up his residence at the Don about 30 years back and took charge of a small school. He afterwards entered the employment of the Don Trading Co., in whose service he was retained until his retirement a short time back, of latter years fulfilling the position of watchman. He was most unfortunate with his family, as about 12 years back he had the misfortune to lose five of his children, whose ages ranged from 14 to 22 years, from that dreaded malady, diphtheria, in less than a fortnight.
The deceased, who was 84 years of age, was much respected, and he leaves a widow and some children, one of whom is Mrs. Anthon of Penguin.

FUNERAL
The funeral of the late Alfred J. Gabell will leave the Don Anglican Church for the Don Cemetery at 2 p.m. to day.
The Advocate 11th October 1910
The announcement of the death of Mr. J. A. Gabell, in Launceston, has revived a sad memory connected with his family at Don. He was the oldest son of Mr. J. A. Gabell, who came to the Don as teacher of the day school about 40 years ago, and suffered a terrible bereavement during his residence there, all his children being claimed as victims to the diphtheria scourge in one week, with the exception of the oldest son, Alfred (whose death is now under notice), the eldest daughter (now Crs. C. Anthon of Penguin), and her youngest sister, since married to Mr. H. J. Nickols, of Don. Alfred Gabell was for a long time engaged by the late Rev. A. Stackhouse, of Longford, and passed into the office of the late Mr. M. Stackhouse, of Launceston, a position he had retained for many years, until stricken by a paralytic seizure a week ago. The remains of the deceased were conveyed to Devonport last evening by train, and thence to the Don Anglican Church, from where the funeral will leave at 2 p.m. today for the public cemetery. Deceased was unmarried, and latterly had been a frequent visitor to Don, generally spending his short vacations there.

Don
On Tuesday afternoon the interment of the late Mr. A. J. Gabell took place in the Don general cemetery. There was a representative following of friends from Launceston, Penguin, Devonport and the surrounding district. The funeral service in the Don Anglican church and at the graveside was conducted by Canon de Coetlogon. Much sympathy is expressed for the aged mother and family in their sad and sudden bereavement. Very great sympathy is expressed for the aged mother, who is now in her 85th year, and travelled from Don to Launceston to be with her last remaining son in his illness.
