SUDDEN DEATH

A painfully sudden death occurred last night Mrs. W. Grieve wife of a well-known Queenstown resident, expiring with scarcely the slightest warning. She had been spending a holiday in Devonport and was walking along the top end of Stewart Street in company with a friend, Mrs. S. Griffiths. Mrs. Grieve first complained that they were walking too fast and then asked for a drink of water. She sat down while Mrs. Griffiths went to procure this and upon returning she complained of a pain in the chest. She was assisted into Mrs. C. Burt’s house, which was close at hand and expired almost immediately Dr. Addison was sent for and certified to the cause of death being syncope or heart failure for which the deceased had been under treatment in Zeehan. Mrs. Grieve was about forty years of age and leaves a family of four, for whom sincere sympathy will be felt. A magisterial inquiry will probably be held today.

INQUEST UNNECESSARY

The magisterial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs. Isabella Grieve, of Queenstown, which took place suddenly in Stewart Street on Thursday was to be held yesterday, but after the jury had been summoned, a telegram was received from Mr. E. Rule, the coroner at Zeehan, notifying that deceased had been under treatment by Dr. Hamilton, who would forward a certificate. With this and Dr. Addison’s certificate that death was due to syncope or heart failure, the coroner (Dr. Smith) declared an enquiry was unnecessary. The funeral will take place at the Bluff cemetery this afternoon, leaving the residence of Mrs. S. P. Griffiths’ at 4 p.m.

THE SUDDEN DEATH

The funeral of the late Mrs. Grieve, who expired suddenly on Thursday night, as reported yesterday, will take place this afternoon. The bereaved husband, with his son and daughter, will arrive this morning from the West Coast. The inquiry, which was arranged for, was dispensed with owing to word having been received from Dr. Walpole, of Queenstown, that he had been treating the deceased for heart trouble. A number of messages of sympathy were received yesterday by Mr. S. P. Griffiths addressed to Mr. Grieve. It was the intention of Mr. and Mrs. Grieve to settle in Devonport after many years’ residence on the West Coast. There is a family of five, the eldest being 23 and the youngest 14.
