DEATH
HALL - On March 29, Richard Hall, District Surveyor, Galliers, Leith, aged 66 years.
The North West Post 31 March 1898
The death of Mr. Richard Hall, District Surveyor, will be heard of with regret. The deceased gentleman was well-known through out the whole of Tasmania and had for nearly thirty years, been a resident of the Forth. Previous to his appointment as surveyor for the Devon district he had been stationed on the East Coast, where his name is identical with many important works. Deceased arrived on the North West Coast in the sixties, when there were no roads such as we have now, but only bridal tracks and travelling was a difficulty. Mr. Hall surveyed most of the Coast roads and they were constructed under his supervision. During his residence on the Coast he completed some very important surveys and subdivided many large estates, among others the property of the Don Trading Co., at the Don, which he put into sections. He also had the surveying of many farms. Another well-known work of the deceased gentleman was what is known as “Hall’s surveyed line,” along the Forth and over Belmont through Middlesex into Rosebery. The deceased took a lively interest in all maters appertaining to the local Anglican Church, of which he was a very active member. He also interested himself in anything that concerned the social and general advancement of the district in which he had been so long an esteemed resident. He had been suffering with internal cancer, and, although signs of the approaching break-down were noticed by his friends, he stuck to his guns till about six weeks back. Since then his public duties were faithfully discharged by his son, Mr. D. Hall. Early last week deceased was taken to the Launceston Hospital, where he died, at the age of 68 years. An operation for the removal of the cancer was performed, but he died early on Tuesday morning. Mr. Hall leaves a widow and nine children, three sons and six daughters, to mourn their loss. Our Forth correspondent wrote yesterday:- Great regret was felt last night when the news came of the unexpected death of Mr. Richard Hall. General sympathy is expressed by everyone for his widow and family. Our Ulverstone correspondent wrote yesterday. General regret was expressed on all sides when it became known that Mr. Richard Hall, the well-known district surveyor, resident at Leith, had died in Launceston on Tuesday. Deceased was highly respected for his sterling upright character and was widely known on the Coast and in deed, throughout the island. General sympathy is expressed for the family in the great loss they have sustained
