THE LAST RITES
The funeral of the late Cr. C. J. Hiller took place at the Mersey Bluff cemetery yesterday afternoon in the presence of a very large and representative gathering of Devonport and Coastal residents. Service was conducted at the Methodist church, the Rev H. Wilkinson officiating. The pulpit and railing were draped in black and white, and the choir sang the hymns, O God! Our Help in Ages Past, and For Ever With the Lord. Mr. Ernest Nicholls was at the organ, and rendered the Dead March. At the conclusion, the cortege moved to the Bluff, where the graveside portion of the service was completed by the Rev. Wilkinson. The chief mourners were Messrs. Harold, Caleb and Arthur Hiller (sons) and the bearers Crs. W. G. Curwen, H. H. McFie, and S. Beattie and Messrs. C. Ramsay, H. M. Heath, and J. J. Warden. The carriers were four municipal employees Messrs. R. Laycock, W. Hennigan. W. Morgan, and S. Burnie. Among those present were the Warden (Cr. W. G. Curwen), Crs. W. B. Cocker, G. Spilsbury, A. Lillico, J. Leary, W. Innes, H. H. McFie, S. P. Holman, S. Beattie, R. Driscoll and A. W. Marshall; several ex-members of the old Town Board, with which deceased was associated; the council clerk (Mr. B. C. Greene); the Latrobe council clerk (Mr. J. Chamberlain), who came to Tasmania in the same ship as deceased some 31 years ago; and practically all of the municipal employees. There were many very beautiful floral tributes. The funeral arrangements were in the hand of Mr. W. Jeffrey.
