William Charles Johnstone

Bluff Pioneer Cemetery Devonport
Early yesterday morning a painful discovery was made by the housemaid at Kimberley’s hotel, West Devonport, as she was calling one of the boarders, Mr. William Charles Johnstone, who usually breakfasted at 7 o’clock. She had knocked at his bedroom door several times, without receiving any response and so entered the room to arouse him. She was shaking him by the shoulder, when she found he was dead. The deceased, who was a plasterer by occupation and foreman for Mr.. W. Bergman, had been resident in Devonport for 2 years and 7 months and was liked by all who were acquainted with him for his unassuming and genial manner. He was of steady sober habits and apparently enjoyed the best of health, being of robust appearance and just the sort of man of whose life any insurance agent would have been ready to take a lease. He was at work on Saturday, executing some repairs in Mr. J. Murray’s house and was out walking on Sunday evening. He had his supper shortly before 10.30 p.m. and retired to rest at that hour, before then in his usual health and spirits and was not again seen alive. Dr. Godfrey, who was called in and made a cursory examination of the body, said that life had been extinct for some time. The occurrence was subsequently reported to the police and Superintendent Scott, under instructions from the coroner, has arranged for a post mortem to be held this morning, to be followed by an inquest at 12 o’clock. The deceased, who was between 37 and 38 years of age is believed to have been a native of Launceston and two brothers and a sister live there, his parents being dead.
