Mr. J. Keddie, Leith

Suddenly, at his residence, Leith, yesterday, the call came to Mr. James Keddie, one of the oldest residents of the district, at the age of 89. Mr. Keddie was born in Fifeshire, and came to Tasmania 59 years ago. A joiner by trade, he secured work at the Don timber mills in the heyday of that then bustling township. Later he acquired land, and became a farmer. He was noted for his integrity and genial temperament. Of a family of six only two survive – Mr. Hugh Keddie (Leith) and Mrs. J. A. Good (Devonport). One of the sons was killed at war.

Late Mrs. J. Keddie, Forth

Don has suffered loss this week by the death of Mrs. J. Keddie, one of its oldest and most respected residents. Only a few weeks ago she lost her husband and his sudden demise no doubt hastened her end. Mr. and Mrs. Keddie came out from Scotland more than 50 years ago, and made their home at the Don, where they had lived practically ever since. They were universally respected and esteemed. They stood as a witness for righteousness, and were an example to all.
They were active in church work. Mrs. Keddie held a class for boys and young men for many years in the old Don church, of which Mr. Keddie was a deacon and faithful worker. Of late years they were not able to take the same active part, but their interest and support never waned, and many a kindly deed and cheerful word of encouragement came from them. They leave grateful memories. May we not say of them that “They were lively and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they are not divided.”
There are two surviving children, Mr. Hugh Keddie, of Leith, and Mrs. J. Good, of Devonport. The latter only recently suffered the loss of her husband.
The funeral, which took place yesterday, was attended by many old friends of the family, and the display of wreaths was numerous. The pallbearers were Mesrs. A. Lillico, M.L.C., W. Northrop, A. E. Reeves and Cr. A. K. Parker. The carriers were Messrs. C. and P. R. Gibson, S. Cutts and E. W. Kidley. Rev. H. A. Leicester officiated at the graveside.
