Death of Mr. J. T. Kneebone
The death occurred on Sunday, October 20, at King Island, of Mr. John Trengrove Kneebone, formerly an esteemed resident of the Aberdeen district.
Born at Gwenneth, Cornwall, England, seventy-nine years ago, he came with his mother to Australia at about seven years of age. After a voyage of six months duration, owing to shipwreck, he, with his mother, joined his father at the Ballarat gold diggings, where he spent his youth, coming as one of the chosen experienced miners to the Beaconsfield mine, where he stayed for a number of years, going from there to coal mines on the East Coast.
On leaving the East Coast he went to Dulverton, and thence to Spreyton, at both of which places he, with Mr. Mackey, opened coalmines. Owing to an accident, which caused continued ill health, he was obliged to retire from mining. He took a farm at Aberdeen, where he spent nearly a quarter of a century. Several years ago the deceased gentleman went to stay at King Island with his daughter, Mrs. C. Punshon, and remained there. He was for many years a local preacher, taking appointments in the various Methodist Churches in the Latrobe circuit. He was presented, last year, with a Certificate from Conference for lengthy service as a local preacher. Although a Methodist, he frequently conducted services in other churches.
The late Mr. Kneebone leaves a family of five daughters, and one son – Mrs. G. Smith, Mrs. C. Punshon, Mrs. T. O’Donoghue (King Island), Mrs. O. Bramich (Nietta), Miss F. Kneebone (Launceston), and Mr. V. T. Kneebone (Devonport). His wife predeceased him seven years ago. Buried King Island
