About People
One of the pioneers of the Devonport district passed away yesterday in the person of Mrs. Laycock, relict of the late Mr. G. A. Laycock, at the age of 74 years. The deceased, who was a native of Yorkshire, England, arrived in Devonport with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beaumont, in 1855, and had been a resident of the town for 57 years. Her husband pre-deceased her some 27 years ago. She leaves a grown up family of thirteen, seven sons and six daughters, and a brother, Mr. James Beaumont, of Don. There are now only four of the original settlers remaining, viz., Messrs. H. Carter, M. Wood, T. Lodge, and J. Naylor. The funeral will take place at the Don cemetery to-morrow afternoon.

The death occurred at his residence, Upper Rooke Street, Devonport, yesterday afternoon of Mr. Joseph Laycock, who has been a long sufferer from lung complaint. The deceased was one of a well-known family; most of whom reside still in Devonport, and was generally respected. He has lived in Devonport for many years and was born here. He was an enthusiastic member of the old Mersey Rowing Club, and many a good race he has assisted to win. He was also a footballer and cricketer in the early days, and was a good athlete. He was a carpenter by trade, and was employed mostly at Wood’s slip. He leaves a widow and nine children to mourn their loss.

The funeral of the late Mr. Joseph Laycock took place at the Don cemetery yesterday afternoon, when a large and representative gathering assembled to pay their last token of respect. Amongst those who followed the cortege were the employees of the council and Wood’s slip, where the deceased had been employed, whilst a number of old time rowers, footballers, and sporting enthusiasts were represented. The pallbearers were Messrs. A. Mannix, J. Henigan, W. Morgan, and S. Burnie. The chief mourners were H., W., and R. Laycock (sons), B., W., R., A., and C. Laycock (brothers), and F. Marshall (son-in-law). The Rev. J. Ebery conducted a short service at the house, and also the service at the graveside. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Mr. W. Jeffrey.

Mrs. J. Laycock, of Forbes Street, Devonport, has been advised that her eldest son, Pte. George Laycock died of wounds at a clearing station in France. This is the second son of the family to make the supreme sacrifice. Pte. Laycock served his time with Messrs. McKay, Sampson and McKinlay’s at Devonport, and for seven years prior to his enlistment he was employed by Mr. W. Williams at Mansfield’s, Victoria. Another son is still on active service, having left with the first contingent.

Mrs. Allan Laycock expired at her residence at East Devonport yesterday afternoon. She had been ailing for some time past, and her death was not totally unexpected. Deceased was a daughter of Mrs. M. Stewart, of the Don, and had spent her life in the district. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband and family in their great loss. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr. A. Laycock at 2.30 tomorrow, for the Don Congregational cemetery, and members of the Loyal Mersey Lodge, I.O.O.F., are requested to attend.

On Sunday morning a respected resident of East Devonport, Mr. Allan Laycock, breathed his last, another victim to that fell disease, consumption, which carried off his wife about five years ago, so that their three little girls are now orphans. He was a native of Mersey, and had lived here 37 years, being one of a family of eight brothers, one of whom is the overseer to the Town Board. He was an active member of the Mersey detachment of the Auxiliary Force, until his health failed, and he was in membership with the Loyal Mersey, I.O.O.F. Lodge; both organizations are expected to be well represented at the funeral to-day, which leaves deceased’s late residence at 2 o’clock for the Don cemetery.

A sad death occurred at West Devonport on Wednesday afternoon, when Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Laycock lost their little daughter Vedas. About 12 months ago she was prostrated with a prolonged attack of rheumatic fever from which she had apparently recovered, but a second attack was experienced last week and heart troubles supervening she passed away as above stated. The funeral takes place this afternoon at the Bluff cemetery.

The death occurred at Devonport yesterday of Miss Sarah V. Laycock, of Nichols Street. The deceased lady, who was very popular, was only in her 17th year. Her illness was of short duration. The funeral of the late Mrs. R. Laycock, of Devonport, took place in the Mersey Bluff cemetery yesterday afternoon and there was a large and representative gathering. The chief mourners were the deceased’s husband, sons, father and brothers. The carriers were Messrs. A. Mantach, L. Fleming, J.Fleming and A Freeman. The Devonport council was represented by Cr. H. H. McFie, as well as several fellow employees of the deceased’s husband, who has been in the employ of the council for several years. The Revd. Father Schinnick conducted the burial service.

The funeral of the late Samuel Claude Laycock, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Beaumont Laycock, who passed away on Monday night, will take place at the Bluff Cemetery at 2 p.m. today. Deceased, who was not strong contracted the influenza, which proved fatal.

Last Sad Rites –
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon of Mr. Samuel Laycock, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Beaumont Laycock, of Gunn Street. Included in the representative attendance were members of the Devonport Council and municipal employees. Deceased’s father is overseer for the council. The coffin was borne by three cousins of deceased and Mr. H. W. McCall. Many floral tributes expressive of the sympathy that is felt for the bereaved parents and family were received. Deceased was 27 years of age and was highly respected. A pathetic feature was the fact that both parents of deceased are laid aside owing to influenza. The interment took place at the Bluff cemetery the service being conducted by the Rev. J. E. Ebery.

The last sad rights in connection with the late Mr. Samuel Claude Laycock were performed in the Mersey Bluff Cemetery by the Rev. J. Ebery on Thursday afternoon. There was a large attendance of mourners, but, unfortunately, the father (Mr. B. Laycock) was too ill to be present. The chief mourners were the two brothers and two uncles of the deceased. The municipal council was represented by Mr. A. W. Marshall, with numerous of the employers, including Mr. J. B. Mitchell. There were a number of beautiful wreaths, including one from the Congregational Church, which was represented by Messrs H. H. Andrews and John Thompson.

Regret was expressed at Devonport at the information that Stanley Laycock had passed away. The information that he was a returned soldier, as appearing Queenstown news is not correct, as he was in fact only 18 years of age. He was a quiet well-respected lad and only recently left Devonport for the West Coast.

Last Sad Rites –
The remains of the late Mr. Beaumont Laycock were laid to rest at the Bluff Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The attendance, which was large and representative, included several of the councilors and all the employees of the council. Rev. J. Ebery officiated at the house and at the graveside. In his address the rev. Gentleman spoke of the late Mr. Laycock as a man of high moral character, with a lofty ideal of citizenship. He had been a faithful employee of the council for over thirty years in the capacity of overseer and was also a consistent worker in the Congregational Church. Four nephews of the deceased bore the coffin. The pall-bearers were Messrs. James Naylor, James Mitchell, Earnest Barker and John Thompson. The chief mourners were two sons, Harry and Allen and three brothers, William, Richard and Charles. There were a large number of beautiful wreaths, including tributes from North Western Tourist and Improvement Association, the Warden and councilors, Loyal Mersey Lodge, employees of the Council and Messrs. McKay, Sampson and McKinlay. The mortuary arrangements were conducted by Mr. W. Jeffrey.

Prior to commencing business at the Devonport council meeting yesterday the Warden referred with regret to the death of the late overseer, Mr. B. Laycock. He paid a warm tribute to the memory of the deceased, both as a citizen and an official. He sincerely sympathized with the widow and family in their very great bereavement. Mr. Laycock had passed away at a comparatively early age. Cr. Vertigan thoroughly endorsed everything the Warden had said, as did Cr. Leary. The latter added that though a hard worker for the council, deceased was prepared to do extra work in his own time free Cr. Driscoll remarked that he had known Mr. Laycock longer than most councilors and deeply sympathized with the wife and family. After a silent motion conveying the councils tribute, it was decided to place on record a minute recording the “splendid services” of the deceased overseer.

The death took place yesterday at his son’s residence, Nicholls street, of Mr. Alfred Laycock, in his 68th year. He leaves a widow and a family of seven. The sons are Messrs. George, Edward, Bernard, Samuel and Leonard Laycock. The first three are residents of Devonport. The daughters are Mesdames Barclay and W. Scott, who are residing in Victoria. The late Mr. Laycock was a native of Devonport and three of his brothers, Messrs. Charles, Richard and William Laycock, reside in Devonport and the other brother Mr. John Laycock, in Victoria. Mr. Laycock was employed for many years as a carpenter and his last job was at “The Advocate” office at Burnie. About seven weeks ago he was forced to give up work and for some weeks his life had been despaired of. Sincere sympathy will be extended to the bereaved widow and family.
