PAINFULLY SUDDEN DEATH
A painful sensation was caused in Devonport yesterday afternoon, when the sorrowful news became known that the youngest son of Cr. and Mrs. W. H. Lewis was dead. It appears that the lad, named Garnet, about 11 years of age, was in his normal health 24 hours previously and on Monday night was taken with vomiting, simple remedies were applied, but without avail and yesterday morning Dr. Addison was called in and pronounced the lad to be suffering from ptomaine poisoning. Despite all his skill, the little sufferer breathed his last during the afternoon, the case being regarded as one of the most sudden, in terminating so quickly, that has been known. The only solution suggested of the tragic event is that the lad ate a pie on Monday and possibly this it was which had such regrettable results. Profound sympathy was expressed for the bereaved parents. It is an exceedingly bitter climax to trying experiences of the last week or two in connection with the father’s seat in the Municipal Council. But at such a time as this, all feelings are swallowed up in an intense sympathy with Cr. and Mrs. Lewis in their loss, for which they were of necessity wholly unprepared. As the lad had been attended by a medical man, it is not expected that an inquest will be necessary.
