The Death of Mr. W. Mansfield

The sad intelligence reached Don yesterday of the death of Mr William Mansfield, which occurred in the Devon Hospital. Deceased proceeded to that institution to undergo an operation for appendicitis, which unfortunately, had a fatal termination. Mr. Mansfield was one of the oldest remaining residents of Don, arriving with his parents when quite a lad, some 45 years ago, his death will be widely regretted. He married a daughter of the late Mr. S. McCall and leaves a numerous family, of whom the oldest son and daughter only arrived home at Xmas time from New Zealand and Westralia. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family. The funeral is arranged to take place at Don to-morrow afternoon.

Obituary

The news of the death of Mr. William Mansfield, at the Devon Hospital yesterday, was received with unfeigned regret, and cast quite a gloom over the district. The sympathy of the residents will be tendered to his wife and family in their sad bereavement. The deceased was born at Ballahoo, near Latrobe, and he spent the greater portion of his life at the Don. Whilst the mill was in operation he worked at it, and afterwards kept a store at Milton. For a while he was engaged in mining and prospecting at Middlesex, and opened up one or two promising shows, including the “Royal George,” but unfortunately they did not realize expectations. Mr. Mansfield was a promising member of the M.U., I.O.O.F., of which he was a Past Grand. He was also a supporter of sport, cricket in particular, and his decisions as umpire were always beyond dispute. He was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, and was held in the highest esteem.

Funeral of Mr. W. Mansfield

Our little hamlet was bathed in gloom yesterday afternoon, the weather being dull, when Mr. W. Mansfield, a respected resident, was laid to rest. There was a large attendance of Devonport, Forth and local residents. The chief mourners were deceased’s four sons, two daughters, two brothers and other relatives. When the cortege left the house it was preceded by 20 Oddfellows. The funeral halted at St. Olave’s Church and the building proved totally inadequate to accommodate the assemblage. Canon de Coetlogon conducted the service, and briefly alluded to the consistent life of an earnest, steadfast, and sincere Christian. The service was concluded at the grave, and afterwards Mr. Michael A’Hearne read the Oddfellows’ Ritual for a departed brother.

The Advocate 8th January 1906

Commendable promptitude was exhibited by the Cornwall District of the I.O.O.F. in paying over the funeral benefit of one hundred pound in respect to the lamented death of Mr. W. Mansfield. In less than a week the cheque for the amount was in the hands of Mrs. Mansfield, who in another column expressed her appreciation of their thoughtfulness and also her grateful thanks for the many floral tributes and sympathetic letters received in her bereavement.
