He was taking a passenger ashore in the ships dinghy, when the boat upset, owing to a squall, Mr. Mead being drowned. The deceased was only 34 years of age, and much regret is expressed at the sad occurrence.
Information of the sad occurrence was received by some relatives of the deceased at Devonport early yesterday afternoon, and much regret was expressed at his untimely end. The deceased was well known on the Coast, having in his boyhood resided at the Don, where in later years he followed the occupation of a carpenter. He was stepson to Mr. F. Brown, of Devonport, and was married to the eldest daughter of Mr. G. Archer, of the Don. With his wife and family of three children, he removed to Georgetown about two years ago, where he accepted the appointment of mate of the Centennial. The deceased was a good swimmer.
