Alleged Attempted Suicide

Between 8 and 9 p.m. last night an old man named John Meers, residing with his son and living about a mile up the Wilmot road, called his daughter-in-law into the room, saying, “I want you to witness this.” He was then pressing a revolver to his ear and she struggled with him, but only desisted when Meers threatened to shoot her. She ran from the room. As she did so she heard the shot. On returning she found her father-in-law had shot himself. Dr. McCall was sent for and found that Meers was in a critical condition.
On enquiry to-day, Meers was still alive.

John Meers who shot himself with a revolver last Friday, to-day succumbed to his injuries. Deceased, in conjunction with Mr. Robert Dickers, now of Blythe, was one of the first people to clear ground and live on the Kindred. At an inquest held to-day, before Mr. Collett as coroner, Alice Elizabeth Meers, daughter-in-law of deceased, said she was sitting in the kitchen on Friday between 8 and 9 p.m., when deceased called her into the room and asked her to stay with him for a while. He was silent for some time and then asked her to witness his suicide. He was forcing the revolver into his right ear and she tried to take it from him, but he told her if she did not let go he would shoot her. She went out of the room, shutting the door and then she heard the report. She went outside and heard deceased groan but she did not go into the house or see any more until her husband arrived. When he came he went into the room and called her. They found the revolver under the mattress.
To the Coroner – Deceased called her after the shot to bring a towel, but she did not go. Deceased spoke to them, but would not tell them where to find the revolver.
To the Jury – He had been very strange in his manner latterly and in great pain. She had heard deceased say, “O God, are you going to forgive me or not.”
To the Jury – She could not swear how he got the revolver, but she had heard the children say he had one, though deceased declared he had not. She did not think he was right in his mind, as he was very peculiar at times.
Evidence was also given by Denis Meers, Michael Ryan and Dr. McCall and the jury found that deceased met his death by a gunshot wound, self inflicted, while temporarily insane.
