GOLDEN WEDDING

Mr and Mrs W. Mulligan, of Devonport

Yesterday Mr and Mrs William Mulligan, of Edward Street, Devonport, celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding day. As they preferred a quiet celebration those visiting them at their home yesterday were limited to relatives and intimate friends. During the day members of the family assembled and gladdened the hearts of their parents with their presence. Suitable gifts, including two cosy armchairs, were presented to them by the family.
Mr. William Mulligan, who was 80 years of age last November, was born at Launceston, but came to the North West early in life and settled at Upper Leith. A man of tremendous energy, he soon gained a reputation as a fine worker and many contracts of clearing land, fencing and so on were performed by him. For many years he was road overseer for the Devonport Road Trust, and a former member of the Trust remarked recently that no public body could have had a more energetic and conscientious employee.
On May 23, 1883, Mr. Mulligan married, at Forth, Miss Alice Lloyd. His life's partner, who is now in her 69th year, is still in excellent health. A talented musician, Mrs. Mulligan (then Miss Lloyd) had occupied the position of organist of the Forth Methodist Church when only 12 years of age and when the golden jubilee of the church was celebrated she played the organ at the service conducted on that occasion. Mr. Mulligan was a singer of no mean order and he and his wife were frequent contributors to the harmony of social gatherings at various N. W. Coast centres. It is also worthy of note that two sons - Messrs G. P. R and Percy Mulligan - took part in the Musical and Literary Competitions just concluded at Devonport, while a grand daughter (Miss Stella Mulligan) won in the Tasmanian ladies' championship singing section and was also placed first in the contralto solo competition. Her father (Mr. G. P. R. Mulligan) is conductor of the morning choir at the Devonport Methodist Church and is one of the most active members of the competitions committee.
Mr and Mrs Mulligan left Leith to reside at Ulverstone about 18 years ago. Later they spent two years with a married daughter at Longford, taking up their residence at Devonport about 12 months ago. There are seven sons and one daughter (Mrs. D. Pickett, of Longford). The sons are Messrs. G.P.R. Mulligan, storekeeper, of Devonport; Percy manager of the retail grocery department of the Devonport branch of the Don Trading Company's business; Allan, storekeeper, of Campbell Town; Howard, who is on the staff of the Commonwealth Oil Refinery at Williamstown, Victoria; Eric, farmer, of Leith; Kenneth, a member of the Customs House staff, Launceston; and Leonard, who is employed at Frost's motor garage, Ulverstone.
Mr. Mulligan, in spite of his 80 years, is still able to get about and Mrs, Mulligan enjoys good health. In a cheery chat with an "Advocate'" representative she expressed gratitude for the many blessings which she and her husband enjoy an referred with motherly pride to the fact that the members of her family were all "doing well" and were respected members of the community in the various places in which they had made their homes.
