Late Wm. Page
Old Forthside Resident
The late Mr. Wm. Page, of Forthside, who was laid to rest in the Don Cemetery on December 31, was one of the old pioneers. Service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. W. Dawson, assisted by the Rev. J. Ebery. The chief mourners were the deceased’s two sons, George and William. Four grandsons acted as carriers. His favourite hymn, “A Day’s March Nearer Home”, was sung.
The worthy old gentleman was a native of Norfolk, and married at Dunham on September 29, 1854. About two years later he and his wife sailed from England on the good ship Sir W. F. Williams. Landing in Hobart, they only stayed a day or so in the capital. They were then engaged by the late Mr. Francis Cotton, one of the pioneers of the East Coast, and remained with him at Calverton (Kelvedon), Swanport, nearly seven years. Mr. and Mrs. Page then moved down to the North West Coast, arriving at Don in 1864, and scarcely moved out of the district afterwards. Here they could point to an unbroken residence of fully 55 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Page were first on the farm at Don Heads for Messrs. Cummings, Raymond and Co. After about twelve months at the Heads, they moved to the township, and Mr. Page was employed in driving one of the timber trucks which brought the logs down the tramway to the sawmill. The next move was to Norfolk Creek, on the main road to the Forth, where deceased started farming, which he pursued for many years. He was a general favourite with all who knew him, was always ready for a joke, could tell some interesting stories of days gone by. He leaves an aged widow and five children – George and William, Mrs. H. Allison (Lower Barrington), Mrs. H. W. McCall (Devonport), and Mrs. P. C. Bramich (Forthside). There are also 45 grandchildren and 57 great grandchildren.

Myrtle celebrates 100th
Telegrams from the Queen, the governor-general (Sir Ninian Stephen), Tasmania’s Governor (Sir James Plimsoll) and the Premier (Mr. Gray) were among the hundreds of cards received by Mrs. Myrtle Page at Devon House, Latrobe, yesterday.
The greetings were to mark Mrs. Page’s 100th birthday.
Born at Don to Henry and Alice Archer, Mrs. Page moved to Devonport 21 years ago to live with her daughter Mrs. Gwen Riley in Deane St.
Mrs. Riley said her mother had been in Devon House for the past six years.
Although confined to bed, Mrs. Page still had a very active mind “and knew what was happening today with all the nurses singing happy birthday and all the cards that she’s received”, her daughter said.
About 40 of Mrs. Page’s relatives and hospital staff helped her celebrate her century.
Mrs. Riley is one of three children.
Two other daughters, Alice and Mina and their families, live at Quoiba and Devonport.
Mrs. Page has 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.
