The North West Post 23rd February 1895
We learn with regret that the Rev. Claude W. Roberts, B.A., died at his residence,
“Woodrising”, Spreyton, at 4 a.m. on Thursday. The deceased gentleman had been ailing
for some time past but it was not thought that his life was in immediate danger, and the
information of his sudden death came as a great shock to his many friends and acquaintances
in the district.
The Rev. Mr. Roberts was born on February 16, 1837, and was a son of the
Rev. Arthur Roberts, of “Woodrising”, Norfolk, England. He was educated at the Rossall
College, in Lancashire, and afterwards attended the Cains College, at Cambridge, where
he took the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He was ordained a minister of the Church of
England in 1860, and afterwards held several important charges, among them being St. Mary’s
Church, at Harrogate, and his last living in England was at Wangford (Suffolk), which he
held for five years.
He resigned the charge in 1879, and at the close of that year
immigrated to Tasmania, landing in January 1880, and shortly afterwards took up his
residence at Spreyton. The deceased was the founder of the Devon Cottage Hospital at
Latrobe, and although the movement for the establishment of the institution was opposed
in many quarters, the rev. gentleman after a hard fight, secured sufficient funds to
erect the present complete building.
He was closely identified with the institution up
to the time of his death, fulfilling the position of hon. manger and chairman of the board of
governors. He had the welfare of the hospital at heart, and spared no time or trouble
to collect subscriptions to carry on the noble work of alleviating the sufferings of those
who were unfortunate enough to seek medical aid at the institution.
The rev. gentleman also
occupied the position of chairman of the Mersey Fruit Board, in the operations of which he
took a deep interest. He leaves a widow and thirteen children.
Of the latter, the eldest,
Claude, is residing at Buenos Ayres, and another son, Percy, is in New Zealand. Among the other sons are Richard R., of Sheffield, and Henry, of Wynyard. The eldest daughter is married to Mr.
Mowbray Gray, who is at present in England, but up to about three years back resided at Spreyton.
The second eldest daughter is Mrs. Sale, of Zeehan.
The funeral is appointed to leave the deceased’s
late residence shortly after the arrival of the Coast train for the private cemetery at Spreyton.
The North West Post 23rd February 1895
The funeral of the late Rev. Claude W. Roberts, of “Woodrising”, Spreyton, took place on
Saturday afternoon, the remains being interred in the private cemetery at Spreyton.
A large number of the leading residents of the district were present, testifying
to the general respect in which the deceased was held.
The coffin was covered with
beautiful wreaths, sent by sympathizing friends. The service at the grave was conducted
by the Rev. J. S. Roper, assisted by the Rev. S. H. Hughes. At the morning service at
St. Paul’s, East Devonport, on Sunday, the Rev. Mr Hughes made touching reference to the
deceased, and the great and good work he had done in the district.
He had been the founder of the Devon Cottage Hospital, and had worked up the
institution to its present high state of efficiency. The organist (Miss Young)
played as a voluntary the beautiful hymn, “Lead kindly light,” and at the close of
the service “The Dead March,” the congregation, at the request of the minister standing.
During the service suitable hymns were given. At the Church Building, West Devonport,
the Rev. Mr. Hughes, in the evening, conducted an in memorial service, at the close of which
“The Dead March” was played.
The congregations on each occasion were large.

The announcement of the death of the Rev. Claude W. Roberts, B.A., was received at Ulverstone with profound regret (writes our correspondent), as the deceased gentleman was not only highly esteemed by many as a friend and clergyman but his great usefulness in his capacity as honorary manager of the Devon Cottage Hospital was fully recognized.

The numerous friends of the family of the late Rev. Claude Roberts will regret to hear of the death of his fifth daughter, Miss Adelaide Seymour Ethelwyn Roberts, in the Launceston General Hospital on Sunday evening. About six weeks ago Miss Roberts entered the Launceston Hospital to be initiated as a nurse, for which calling she had long expressed an inclination. She then had a heavy cold, and had to return home for a week, at the end of which time it was thought she had recovered, and she returned to the hospital. Pleurisy and rheumatism set in a few days after her return, but from then it was thought she was convalescent. On Saturday morning, however, the young lady was found to have blood clots on the brain, and she succumbed on Sunday evening, at the early age of 21 years.
