Last Rites
There was a very large and representative attendance at the funeral, which took place yesterday afternoon of the late Robert James Rudd, an old resident of the town, who passed away at his residence in Smith Street on friday morning. The number of mourners on foot was the largest seen in the district for several years, bearing ample testimony to the esteem and respect with which the deceased gentleman was regarded. After a service at the house conducted by Rev. G. T. Arthur, the cortege moved to the Bluff Cemetery, the place of interment. About 28 members of the Mersey Lodge P.A.F.S., of which body deceased had been a member for 40 years, preceded the hearse, while the lodge service at the graveside was conducted by Bro. E. Cole, the grand chaplain for Tasmania. Four members of the lodge were the pallbearers. The wreaths, included tokens from the P.A.F.S. and from the Launceston Post Office. Those present included friends and relatives from Launceston, the Coast and the South of the Island and there were also noticed the Hon. A. Lillico, M.L.C., and Messrs. H. H. McFie and H. Lane, M’s H.A. The chief mourners were the three sons, Messrs. Bert (Launceston), Ron and Albert (Devonport) and two brother-in-law, Messrs. Geo. Spencer (Bishopsbourne) and Edward Corbell (Sheffield).
