DEATH

RUSSELL - On October 6, at Latrobe, Henry Arthur Russell, of Kindred; aged 34 years. Deeply regretted by a large circle of friends.

The North West Post 15th October 1898

Quite a gloom (writes our Kindred correspondent) was cast over our district, when the news reached here that Mr. A. Russell had passed over to the great majority. He was affected by influenza about three months ago and was taken to the Devon Cottage Hospital. Some time after returning home he contracted lung complications and had to return to the hospital, where he died from an abscess on the lungs. General sympathy is evinced, as he leaves a young widow and three children, who were entirely depending on him for support. The remains were bought from Latrobe and interred in the Kindred Wesleyan Cemetery on Thursday, when a large number attended to pay the last respects to the deceased. The coffin was literally covered with wreaths and flowers. The Rev. Mr. Green officiated at the grave.

OBITUARY

Late Mr. John Russell, Kindred

The late Mr. John Russell, of Kindred, had an interesting career. Mr. William Russell, of Ulverstone, said yesterday that when a young man his late brother was a member of the first party to journey to Mount Bischoff. The late Mr. W. J. Fitzpatrick, of Deloraine, took a team of pack horses to Bischoff and he had as assistants the Late Mr. John Russell; Mr. T. Horsham, an old and well known resident of Ulverstone; and Mr. T. Kenny, well known at Forth. The late Mr. Russell worked on the Bischoff field for two years and then took up mining at Lefroy. He also worked at the Ilfracombe iron mines. After that he was at West Pine for a while and then commenced farming at Kindred, marrying Miss E. J. Polden, of Kindred. The deceased farmed at Kindred alongside Mr. William Russell for 50 years. He was an early member of the Loyal Forth Lodge, I.O.O.F., which celebrated its diamond jubilee recently. He was also a member of the Leven Road Trust for some time, before the inception of local government. The late Mr. Russell took a keen interest in politics and the affairs of primary producers.
The funeral took place at Kindred on Friday.

The death occurred at Kindred yesterday morning of Mrs. M. A. Russell, relict of the late John Russell, after a lengthy illness, at the age of 76 years. The deceased was one of the district's pioneers and came to the place with her late husband when it was nearly all dense forest and heavy timber. She lived to see the farm they first settled on, one of the most valuable properties in the Kindred district. The old lady was possessed of singular vitality and could recount many stirring reminiscences of the hardships of pioneering days. The family include Messrs. John, William and E. A. Russell
