DEATH

SNARE – On August 7, at his late residence, “Devon Park”, Forth, Robert Snare; aged 69 years Burial Forth (Wesleyan) Methodist Cemetery

The North West Post 10th August 1901

General regret will be felt by residents of Devon on learning that Mr. Robert Snare, a well known and highly esteemed resident of the Forth, passed away on Wednesday evening. The deceased had been engaged in work on his farm, apparently in good health, on Wednesday. He had dinner and went again to his work, but returned about 3 o’clock, complaining of a pain in his chest. Mrs. Snare, who felt no alarm as to his condition, gave him a glass of brandy and he went to bed. She found his hands were very cold, but after rubbing them, succeeded in imparting to them some warmth. The unfortunate lady quitted the room for a few minutes and on return found that her husband had breathed his last. Dr. G. Gordon Stuart was at once sent for and pronounced death due to fatty degeneration of the heart, consequently, no inquest was necessary. The deceased gentleman, who was 69 years of age at the time of his demise, was of a most genial nature, his cheery disposition being always heartily welcome where two of three kind spirits were gathered and by unflagging industry had made for himself a comfortable home. He was a man of the most sterling integrity, whose word would be taken for any sum. A Native of Norfolk, England, Mr. Snare had resided in Tasmania for about 44 years, arriving here in 1857. He at once entered the employ of Mr. T. L. Button and subsequently purchased from that gentleman "Devon Park," where he resided up to the time of his death, one of the most sterling farmers on the Coast. To mourn the loss of a faithful husband and good father there are left a widow and thirteen children and to these the utmost sympathy will be extended in their great and sudden loss. All except two daughters, all his children are living on the Coast, three sons living at Castra, one at Hamilton road, one daughter at Devonport and one at Burnie, the rest of the family living at the place of their birth. The funeral will leave "Devon Park" for the Wesleyan cemetery, Forth, at 2 o'clock today.

Born When Victoria was crowned.

Mrs. M. Snare, Ulverstone - Aged 94 years

Mrs. M. Snare, who lives with her eldest son, Mr. Geo Snare, at Ulverstone, celebrated her 94th birthday recently. She was born in Norfolk England, in a farming district known as Larling, 20 miles from Norwich, on October 23, 1838 - the year Queen Victoria was crowned.
Mrs. Snare has been bedridden for many years, but has retained her faculties in a marvellous manner. She recalls her girlhood days and the happenings of her ealry life as though they were events of a few years ago and can relate conditions of 80 years ago in a vivid way. When she was young machinery for the manufacture of materials was unknown and clothing was made by hand looms. Matches, which are such a convenience today, were unknown. The steel and flint had to be knocked together so that a spark would ignite a tinder. The timber was a clean piece of dry rag, well dried by the fire, so that it would light easily. The grain was threshed by hand on brick floors, which occupied the centre of the barns.
Mrs. Snare recalls coaches running daily from London to Norwich - a distance of 100 miles. Then the railway came about 1848 and that was her first glimpse of what in those times was a triumph for engineering.
In 1857 Mr. Snare was a member of the pioneer band which arrived in Tasmania from Norfolk in the Southern Eagle. The names of many of that party became well known in this part of the state. Besides the Snares there were Vertigans, Yaxleys, Parkers, Macrows, Wards and other whose descendants are till known in these parts. Mrs. Snare is almost the last, if not the only, surviving member of the Southern Eagle's passengers. She relates that Tasmania was a very strange place in those days and they were all strangers in a strange land. There were few roads and bridges and to go on a journey was a matter of travelling in a bullock or horse dray. "And what a place to come to," relates Mrs. Snare. "We said we would save our money and go back to England.. But we stayed here and bought a bush farm and cleared it and reared a family of 13 children."
Mrs. Snare has 60 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her 31 years ago. She can repeat many hymns and passages of scripture from memory; does a little sewing and when receiving visitors she always proves an interesting conversationalist.

Birthday Celebrations

Mrs. R. Snare, Dial Street, Ulverstone, celebrated her 95th birthday recently. Among the many visitors Mrs. Snare received were a party of Baptist C.E. Society members, together with Pastor R. Steel. Mrs. Snare was a member of the large party of emigrants who came to this part of the world from Norfolk (England) in the sailing ship Southern Eagle, arriving in Launceston in 1857. Many of these early settlers were in the Don district for many years and their descendants are now scattered in all parts of the Commonwealth. Mrs. Snare has been bedridden for about a quarter of a century and is in very poor health.
