Death of Major Spilsbury.

The death occurred yesterday afternoon at his residence, Rooke Street, Devonport, of Major Edgar Charles Spilsbury, at the age of 77 years. He was one of the best known of Devonport’s citizens, having been a resident for 30 years, and for several years was a member of the Marine Board, while in other days he took an active part in public matters and was a frequent contributor to the press on subjects of local concern.
Major Spilsbury was s son of the late General John Spilsbury, of the India service, and, like his father followed the military profession. Born at Rangoon, in Burmah, he was taken to England for his education, and in 1871 he entered the Woolwick Royal Military Academy. He qualified in the engineering course, and two years later secured a commission. He served in India, and took part in the Afghan war. While on furlough he visited Australia and came to Tasmania, where he married Miss Caroline Fulton, of Forth, in 1884, and returned with his bride to India. When the term of his service had expired he came to Tasmania to reside, in 1901. He made his home at East Devonport, and soon took an active interest in local concerns. His advice was invaluable to the Mersey Marine Board during a period when various improvement schemes were under discussion, while he also advised the Town Board on important details relating to the water system. He was also active in church work.
Of late years his health had been failing. Some three years ago he removed to West Devonport to reside, but was seldom abroad, and during the last two years he was an invalid. He had a family of six, of whom three survive – Mr. Donald Spilsbury (New Zealand), Mr. Gordon Spilsbury (Victoria) and Miss Esma Spilsbury, of Devonport. All his sons fought in the war, and one made the supreme sacrifice. Cr. G. M. Spilsbury, of East Devonport, is a younger brother.
The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon
