The death occurred at Devonport on Sunday of another hearty worker for the local Methodist Church in the person of Mrs. D. Stephens. The deceased lady had been ill scarcely a week, the cause of death being pneumonia, supervening on influenza. She was attended by Dr. Payne, but despite every care and attention passed away peacefully about midday. Mrs. Stephens was barely 32 and leaves a husband and young daughter to mourn their loss. As previously started she was a willing worker in matters connected with the Methodist Church and had a large circle of friends and acquaintances, both in and out of that body, by whom she will be greatly missed. The annual meeting of subscribers to the Devonport Benevolent Society, to have been held yesterday, was postponed, on the account of the death of Mrs. Stephens, one of the members. For the same reason the committee’s meeting, to have been held earlier, was adjourned for a month, after a resolution of condolence had been passed to the bereaved family. Members of the Loyal Mersey Lodge, P.A.F.S.O.A., are requested to meet at the lodge room at 2 p.m. today to attend the funeral.

Dearest Edith, thou hast left us,

Sparkles on thy shining brow.

Christ has died and set thee free,
Wait a little dearest Edith,
And we soon shall follow thee.

Much regret was felt at the Mersey yesterday when it became known that Mr. James Stephens senior had expired on the previous evening. The deceased had been ailing for some months past and the end did not come unexpectedly. For many years the deceased resided at George Town and was in charge of a craft trading between Launceston and that port. About seven years ago he returned to the Mersey. He leaves a wife and a large family, mostly grown up.
