DEATH OF MR. W. H. L. THOMAS
The grim reaper has been particularly busy of late with the old identities of Tasmania. The most recent to fall before his time is Mr. William Henry Lyell Thomas, the eldest son of the late Mr. B. W. Thomas, of Appledore, who died at the residence of his sister, Mrs. C. A. Littler, Don Road, early yesterday morning. He arrived with his parents a mere infant at the Mersey, and might therefore almost claim to be a native of the district. For many years he was in the Government Civil Service, being police clerk at Latrobe, St. Helen’s and Scottsdale respectively. Whilst in the former position he was a frequent visitor to Devonport, especially on the Sabbath, and he took a live interest in local matters, and was a keen critic of the Town Board, more particularly over the waterworks construction disputes. He was a widower, but left no family; his wife was a victim of an unfortunate shooting accident at Kimberley’s Hotel a few years ago. At the death of his father, he was named as one of the trustees of the Appledore Estate, but the management was largely left to Mr. O. G. Douglas, a Launceston solicitor. He was in his 63rd year at the time of his death, which was not unexpected, as he had been in failing health for some time suffering from a complication of diseases. His funeral will leave his sister’s residence at 10 a.m. today for the Bluff Cemetery.DEVONPORT
