FUNERAL

The Advocate 13th November 1919
The late Mr. H. Walker – A heavy gloom was cast over the village when it was ascertained that Mr. H. Walker had passed away after a short illness. The late Mr. Walker was highly esteemed by all who knew him and was always ready to assist anyone at any time and was always to the fore in arranging public concerts, etc. Mr. Walker was also an ardent church worker and will be greatly missed amongst members of this church. The funeral was very well attended. Many floral tributes were sent, including one from the members of the Spreyton Progress Association, for which the deceased was an ardent worker and one from the Tasmanian Freehold Investment Company, Mr. Walker being foreman there for many years. The deceased leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss and the greatest sympathy is felt for them in their very sad bereavement.

The last sad Rites
– The largest funeral that has been seen at Spreyton for some time was that of the late Mr. H. J. Walker, which took place yesterday. It moved from deceased’s late residence to the Mersey Bluff cemetery, where religious service was conducted by the Rev. N. G. Higgs of Latrobe, assisted by the Rev. A. S. Bryant, of Devonport. The principal mourners were deceased’s son and daughters, while the coffin was carried by four brothers, Messrs. G., L., E. and B. Walker. The Baptist Church, with which deceased was connected as Sunday School superintendent at Spreyton, was represented by the Rev. Bryant (pastor) and Mr. F. E. Clements (secretary) and many very beautiful wreaths and other floral tributes were received. Mr. Walker came to Spreyton some time ago in connection with the Tantallon Estate and later entered into partnership with Mr. J. D. Green, undertaking the care of orchard properties for absentee owners. He was the first Spreyton victim of pneumonic influenza.

Another death occurred on Wednesday afternoon from the after effects of influenza, but the victim was not a resident of Devonport. Mr. Herbert J Walker, of Spreyton, had been suffering from the prevailing epidemic for some time and on Wednesday arrangements were made for his removal to the isolation Hospital, but he had breathed his last when the ambulance arrived at his residence. He was a skilled orchardist and had several orchards under his superintendence, being in charge of the late Mr. A. L. Kerr's property at his death. He was 43 years of age and his widow, who is left with a small family, was a Miss Cox, of Parkham. His funeral took place in the Mersey Bluff Cemetery this afternoon. The religious service was conducted by the Rev. A. S. Bryant, the deceased having been superintendent of the Baptist Sunday School at Spreyton.
The Examiner 14th November 1919
Memorial Service – The Baptist Church was completely full on Sunday afternoon when the Rev. A. S. Bryant conducted an In Memoriam Service to the late Mr. H. J. Walker. Although a member of the Methodist Church, he had assisted in the Baptist Sunday School for several years and had been superintendent since the decease of the late Mr. G. F. Lawler in July, 1918. The Rev. G. Higgs, of Latrobe, was to have conducted the service, but had a funeral at Green Banks and Mr. H. H. Denney, of Melrose, attended and delivered a touching eulogy on the deceased, who was born at Exton, of Christian parents and had been a member of the Methodist Church for 20 years. He was a man of broad-minded views and was willing to assist all sections of the community. His death was a great loss to the district. The Rev. Mr. Bryant delivered a special address.
