Obituary

Mrs. J. Whitham

A Devonport Pioneer

Mrs. John Whitham died early on Saturday morning at her residence, Devonport, at the age of 75 years, after being a sufferer for some months. The late Mrs. Whitham was one of the pioneers of the district. For years she was a school teacher, prior to the advent of the State system, and many Devonport residents now past middle age received tuition at her hands. Over 25 years ago she married Mr. John Whitham, who had arrived from Canada and settled in the town. They had no family. She relinquished her teaching work, but continued to take a very active interest in church matters, having been a devoted member of the Church of England. She was well known, very popular and highly esteemed for her many qualities of heart and head.
A brother is Mr. A. G. Brown, who years ago was a very prominent advocate for unification.
At her bedside were two nieces, Mrs. Groom, of Wynyard, and Nurse Brown, of Hobart.
The funeral will take place this afternoon, moving from St. John’s church following a service, which will be held there at 3 o’clock.

Obituary

Mr. John Whitham

The death occurred at his residence, “Rosemount”, Best Street, Devonport, late on Friday night, of Mr. John Whitham, in his 91st year.
The late Mr. Whitham was born near Mottram, in the County of Cheshire, England, in 1843. In his 29th year he went to Canada, where he lived till nearly the end of the century. He first came to Tasmania in 1894, on a visit to his brother, the late Major L. Y. Whitham. He was so delighted with Tasmania that on his retirement from railway work in Canada he decided to make his home here, and in 1900 took up his residence in Devonport. There was to him no place like Devonport, and he took a keen interest in the progress of the town. He was for three years a member of the municipal council. Much of his time was devoted to horticulture, and his exhibits of flowers won many prizes at local shows. Several of the ornamental trees on the Esplanade were planted and tended by him. A few years after his arrival in Devonport he was married to Miss Mary Brown. His wife died early in 1932.
Mr. Whitham led a very active life, and had travelled widely in Europe and America. He enjoyed wonderful health, and his final illness was brief. He was buried on Saturday afternoon, his last resting-place being in St. Olave’s churchyard at Don. The funeral was private. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Mr. W. Jeffrey.
The late Mr. Whitham is survived by two sons, who reside in Canada. A nephew is Colonel J. L. Whitham, C.M.G., D.S.O., State Commandant in Tasmania. Mr. B. Whitham, of the Education Department, is also a nephew.
