WILKINS

John Wilkins

Forth Methodist Cemetery

Died 21 May 1891
Age 25 years

A correspondent at the Forth writes:-

A death occurred here on Friday morning, under somewhat distressing circumstances, the victim being a young man, named John Wilkins, of Kindred. It appears that he received a sentence of seven days for stealing from a hut on the Pine road, but, by what I can make out it was a lark among some young men working for Mr. G. Turner, road contractor. How ever, accused was arrested at his mother's house at the Kindred and locked up in a cell at the Sprent station, all night, with out a blanket to cover him, when he caught a severe cold. he was sentenced to seven days in the Ulverstone gaol and got much worse while he was there. on the Saturday, Mr. B. Shaw, Commissioner of Police, on visiting the police station ordered him to be dismissed and taken home. He was not removed till Monday, when he was brought to the residence of his uncle, Mr John Dawes and died there of inflammation of the lungs, early yesterday week. His age was only 25 years. He was of a very quiet turn of mind and was well-known in the district, which was shown by the large number who attended his funeral on Sunday in the Wesleyan cemetery. Great sympathy is felt for his widowed mother and her large family and it is a case I think which demands investigation.
