The death took place at Devonport yesterday of a very old resident in the person of Mr. Francis Woodhouse, in his 81st year. The deceased landed in Tasmania as a boy over 70 years ago, and lived during the whole of the time at Don and Devonport. He first resided at Don, and then, when Devonport came into prominence, he shifted to that centre, married and reared a large family. He enjoyed robust health until quite recently. He leaves a widow, four sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. The sons are Messrs. J. Woodhouse (Launceston), Fred. Woodhouse (Burnie), L. Woodhouse (Newtown), and Alf. Woodhouse, who is a member of the crew of the steamer Kokiri, while the daughters are Mesdames W. H. Reid (Devonport), F. Pearson (Ulverstone), and Miss Woodhouse (Devonport). The funeral will leave the residence, Wenvoe Street, to day.

Last Sad Rites


The funeral of the late Mr. Francis Woodhouse was largely attended yesterday, the interment being at the Congregational Cemetery, Don. The chief mourners were the four sons and two sons-in-law, and the pallbearers, four members of the Oddfellows’ Lodge, of which deceased had been a keen member for many years. Amongst the floral tributes was one from the Congregational Church. The Rev. H. A. Leicester officiated at the graveside.

Mrs. F. Woodhouse, Devonport


Mrs. Fanny Woodhouse, widow of the late Mr. Francis Woodhouse, died yesterday at her home, 34 Wenvoe Street, Devonport, in her 80th year. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Charles Andrews, and was reputed to be the oldest native-born resident of Devonport, the place of her birth being East Devonport, then and for many years subsequently known as Torquay.
Mrs. Woodhouse was highly respected. She was a consistent supporter of the Congregational Church, and, during the war was a noted Red Cross worker. Of late her health had been indifferent. She reared a family of seven, two sons, Messrs. Fred and Alfred Woodhouse, having predeceased her. The surviving members are: Messrs. John Woodhouse (Launceston), Leonard Woodhouse (Newtown), Mrs. W. H. Reid (Devonport), Mrs. F. Pearson (Ulverstone) and Miss Hilda Woodhouse (who resided with her mother).

The Late Mrs. F. Woodhouse, Devonport


The funeral of the late Mrs. Fanny Woodhouse, of Devonport, took place yesterday, the place of interment being the old Don cemetery. There was a representative attendance. The chief mourners were Messrs. John and Leonard Woodhouse (sons), W. Reid and F. Pearson (sons-in-law), J. Reid (grandson), and W. Archer (brother-in-law). The pallbearers were Messrs. A. Lillico, M.L.C., R. Featherstone, W. Pretty and L. Rose, while Messrs. H. N. Good, C. Layton, J. Jeffrey and J. Baldock were the carriers.
Included in a fine collection of floral tributes were wreaths from Messrs. Birchall and Son Pty. Ltd., employees of Boag’s Brewery, and the Devonport Croquet Club.
Included among those present were Senator Herbert Hays, Messrs. V. H. D. Horton, A. R. Mather, H. Hiller, A. D. Soutar, J. F. Wright, W. Henry, G. A. Littler and R. Lapthorne. Rev. H. A. Leicester conducted services at the house and graveside.

WOODHOUSE – On April 4, 1931, at Sydney, Alfred, third son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Frank Woodhouse, of Devonport, aged 43 (Accidentally killed.)

Former Resident’s Death

News was received on Saturday of the sudden death at Sydney of Mr. Alfred Woodhouse, as the result of an accident. Deceased, who was the third son of Mrs. and the late Mr. Frank Woodhouse, of Devonport, was well known on the West Coast, being one of the few remaining survivors of the Mount Lyell disaster. The late Mr. Alfred Woodhouse, who had been working as a fireman on a steamer trading between Sydney and Newcastle, was in his 44th year. He was married, and leaves a widow and one child. Three sisters and three brothers survive him – namely, Mrs. F. Pearson (Ulverstone), Mrs. W. Reid (Devonport), and Miss H. Woodhouse (Devonport). The brothers are Messrs. Jack (Launceston), Len (Hobart), and Fred (Burnie). No particulars of the accident came to hand with the sad news.
