Mr. Robert Yaxley, Devonport


The death occurred late on Saturday night of Mr. Robert Yaxley, of Steele Street, Devonport, and formerly of Don. The deceased was for years a well-known and highly respected farmer of Don, and was looked upon as one of the most thorough and practical agriculturists on the Coast. He leaves a widow and grown-up family, the members of which are Mrs. C. V. Wellard, Miss Rita Yaxley (Devonport) and Mr. Robert Yaxley (Don).
The funeral will leave at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow for the old Don cemetery.

Funeral of Mr. R. H. Yaxley


The funeral of the late Mr. Robert Hooks Yaxley was very largely attended yesterday, there being over 60 motor cars in the procession. The cortege left the residence, Don road, for the old Don cemetery, where the last rites were performed by the Rev. W. H. E. Abbey, assisted by Mr. W. Hawkey, home missionary at Forth. The pallbearers were Messrs. John Thompson, H. A. Vertigan, G. Crawford and Geoff. Littler, while the carriers were Messrs. L. and M. Yaxley, H. and W. Stratton.
More than 20 members of the Forth Rechabite Tent in regalia walked in procession ahead of the hearse for part of the distance. The chief mourners were the son, Mr. R. Yaxley, of Forth, and numerous nephews and other relatives, including two sons-in-law, Messrs. C. V. Wellard (Devonport) and M. Hardy (Don). The gathering included many residents of Forth, where deceased was born and spent most of his life on the farm before retiring to live at Devonport.

Late Mrs. Emma Yaxley, Devonport


The funeral of the late Mrs. Emma Jane Yaxley, of Steele Street, Devonport, took place at the old Don cemetery on Wednesday. Mrs. Yaxley lived in the Forth district before moving to Devonport about 18 years ago. She was a loyal supporter of the Methodist Church at Forth and later at Devonport, and assisted in many charitable activities. Mrs. Yaxley was born at Dunorlan, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pearce.
She leaves one son, Mr. R. A. Yaxley (Forth) and four daughters, Miss E. Vertigan (Devonport), Mrs. H. M. Hardy (Lillico), Mrs. C. V. Wellard and Mrs. V. W. White (Devonport). Services at home and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. Norman Elliott, who spoke in feeling terms of the services rendered to the Methodist Church and the community by the deceased, and extended the sympathy of the community to the relatives.
The chief mourners were Messrs. R. A. Yaxley (son), E. Pearce (brother), H. M. Hardy, C. V. Wellard, and V. W. White (sons-in-law), and Masters K. and D. Yaxley (grandsons). Mrs. Yaxley’s husband predeceased her almost ten years ago. Messrs. G. A. Littler, H. A. Vertigan, M. Barker and H. J. Rockliff were the pall-bearers, while the carriers were Messrs. Graeme Yaxley and Brian Hardy (grandsons) and H. Stratton and J. W. Pearce (nephews). Many beautiful floral tributes were received, including tokens from the Methodist Church Trust, Ladies’ League and Auxiliary staff of McKinlay’s Pty. Ltd., T. White and Sons, and the Black and White Orchestra.

The death of Mr. A. G. Yaxley took place at his residence at Spreyton on Wednesday. Deceased was only 34 years of age, and he leaves a widow and daughter to mourn their loss. He saw active service with the A.I.F., 3rd Tunnelling Company, and his health suffered in consequence. He will be accorded a military funeral, which is fixed for to-morrow, starting for the Don Cemetery at 1.30 p.m.

The funeral of the late Sapper A. G. Yaxley, of Spreyton, took place yesterday afternoon, the place of interment being the Don cemetery. The large attendance testified to the respect in which deceased was held. Four returned soldiers bore the coffin to the grave. Rev. Fred. J. Wood conducted a service at the graveside, where the P.A.F.S. ritual was also observed by the lodge chaplain. Captain Perry (Salvation Army) sounded “The Last Post.”

YAXLEY – On August 16, at her residence, Hamilton Road, Susan Sarah, beloved wife of Matthew Yaxley, in her 54th year.

The remains of the late Mrs. M. Yaxley (writes our correspondent) were laid in their last resting place in the Don Cemetery on Monday afternoon, the principal mourners being the husband and five sons of deceased and her five brothers, the Messrs. Revell. The cortege, which was one of the largest seen here for some time, contained about 50 members of the Star of the Forth Tent, I.O.R., who, according to custom, turned out to show their sympathy with their bereaved brother.

Mr. Matthew Yaxley, one of the oldest settlers on the Hamilton Road, Forth, died on Thursday, aged 68 years. The late Mr. Yaxley has spent nearly all his life in the neighborhood of the Forth, beginning his residence at the Don 50 years ago, with his father (the late Mr. William Yaxley, who afterwards settled where Mr. Robert Yaxley now lives at Norfolk Creek). At that time Mr. Yaxley was engaged felling timber for Raymond and Cumming’s. The farms at present owned by the Yaxleys are “the pick of the district”, and were cleared by the father and sons, who selected at Forth when the place was nothing but dense bush. The deceased was a native of Norfolk, England, and leaves a family of ten, several of whom are married. The funeral leaves the house at 2p.m. to-morrow for the Don cemetery.

An old pioneer was laid to rest in the Don cemetery yesterday afternoon, in the person of Mr. Matthew Yaxley. The cortege, which included members of the Star of the Forth Lodge, I.O.R., was representative of all the surrounding districts, and was the longest seen for many years. The Rev. C. S. Angwin officiated at the grave.

YAXLEY – On the 28th July, at 26th General Hospital, Etaples, France, of wounds, Private James Keith Yaxley, youngest son of the late Matthew and Susan Yaxley, Forth, N.W. DEATH

YAXLEY – On 8th January, at Hamilton road, William Yaxley, aged 71 years. Deeply regretted. “The memory of the just is best.”

The late William Yaxley, of Forth, was one of the early pioneers of Norfolk Creek, and arrived in the colony by ship “Southern Eagle”, having as shipmates several old residents of the district, and was a very respected and widely-known member of the community, and a great supporter of the Wesleyan Church. Was a local preacher in the old country and also in the colonies. Was born at Norfolk, England, in 1817, and died at Norfolk Creek in 1887. The youngest son, Robert Yaxley, lives at the homestead, and the farm is one of the neatest in the district.

The death of another very old resident of the Coast, In the person of Mrs. Mary Yaxley, took place yesterday, at the residence of her daughter, Miss Yaxley, on the Esplanade, West Devonport. She had been ailing for many years, and some time since, for the purpose of being more convenient to medical attendance, was removed from her residence at the Forth to the house of her daughter, already mentioned. The deceased was advanced in age, being 80 years old. She came from her native place, Norfolk, England, 40 years ago to the Forth, where, with her husband, who pre-deceased her, farming pursuits were entered upon, and continued by the family ever since. She leaves a grown-up family of sons and daughters.

The death took place yesterday at her residence, William Street, Devonport, of Miss Susanna Yaxley, who was a member of one of the best-known pioneering families on the Coast. She came with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William Yaxley, to Forth from Norfolk, England, when only seven years of age. The coast at that time was in almost virgin state, being densely covered with scrub. Some months ago, the late Miss Yaxley and her brother went to reside at Devonport. A brother and two sisters survive her. The funeral is to take place at the Don cemetery, leaving her late residence at 2.30 o’clock this afternoon.

The funeral of the late Miss Ann Elizabeth Yaxley took place yesterday, when there was a large attendance. Rev. F. C. Bremer officiated at the house and graveside. The chief mourners were several nephews and other relatives. The pallbearers were Messrs. G. and John Yaxley, H. A. Vertigan and A. Lillico, M.L.C. The bearers were Messrs. L. and A. Miss Fanny Yaxley


The death occurred at the Meercroft Hospital, Devonport, on Friday, of Miss Fanny Yaxley, a well-known resident of Devonport. She was the third daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Yaxley, of Don. Her parents came from Norfolk, England, in the early days, in the sailing ship Southern Eagle. That vessel brought a number of immigrants to Tasmania.
After spending her girlhood days at Don, she went to Victoria. Returning some years later, she, in company with her sisters, conducted “Greystone House”, a boarding establishment on the Esplanade, on land now occupied by Messrs. Holyman and Sons’ shipping offices. She was the last surviving member of the family, four brothers and three sisters having predeceased her.
The funeral took place at the old Don cemetery yesterday, Rev. Norman Elliott conducting the burial service. The chief mourners were Messrs. T. B., G. V. and R. Yaxley and H. and B. Stratton (nephews). The carriers were Messrs. L., W., M. and A. Yaxley. A representative gathering and a profusion of floral tributes signified the respect in which deceased was held. The pallbearers were Messrs. H. A. Vertigan, W. Grainger, G. V. Yaxley and A. Hays.
